Hey there Mobsters,
This is just a quick note to let you know a couple of things:
You can find my latest short story out today over at Bizarro Central, as part of their newly reinvigorated Flash Fiction Fridays series. “Tattoorovka” is a haunting tale of body horror and dark folk magic set in the battlefields of Ukraine. The word itself has layers of meaning, and I like to think several of those layers exist in this brief bit of flash fiction. I hope you love it, and that it makes you squirm.
Next, pre-orders are up for The Midnight Labyrinth, an anthology from Grendel Press set for publication on May 12th. This will contain my short story “Into the Casbah.” Set in the early years of the Iraq War, it tells the tale of an infantry squad who pursue an attacker into the desert only to be forced to take refuge in an ancient ruin during a massive sand storm. All told from the perspective of an attached woman’s magazine journalist who is there to write a puff piece garnering support for the war back home.
So what else is going on?
I got my spouse into Yellowjackets (Showtime), starting all over for me with season 1. This show, especially the first season, is just about perfect. Amazing characters, both in the past of 1996 and the near present day of 2021. Dynamic pacing and storytelling. And a belligerent and hard rocking soundtrack. I really love everything about the show. It is widely available on streaming services.
I am also playing through the new PS5 release of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. This game is a masterpiece set in the interim years between Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Last Crusade. Cinematic and thoughtful, a very lived in world, beautifully rendered locations around the globe, and *SURPRISE* you get to punch, shoot, and bull whip all the Nazis and Fascists you can get your hands on. The story is right up with the best of the series, and Troy Baker (the actor also known for his portrayal of Joel Miller in The Last of Us video game series) nails his Harrison Ford/Indiana Jones voice work.
Thanks for staying with me and reading this far. I’d love to know what you think of “Tattoorovka” and if you have anything else you’d like to see in this space!
